The City of Hartford is situated in both the Dodge and Washington Counties of Wisconsin. Some areas of Hartford real estate have recently been annexed into Pike Lake and other communities. The area that would eventually become Hartford was first surveyed in 1843. In 1844, a dam was built the Rubicon River. A sawmill quickly followed to create lumber to build up the surrounding area by using the water as an energy source. A railway was built in 1855 that connected the area to nearby LaCrosse as well as Milwaukee, Minneapolis and Chicago. The railway was a functioning part of the local economy until the early 20th century.
In its early days, Hartford real estate was home to Kissel, an auto manufacturer. Today, Hartford is the headquarters for API Healthcare as well as many other smaller businesses.

The School District of Hartford oversees the public education of students living in Hartford. There are five elementary, one middle and one public high school operating in Hartford real estate.
